What Is a CSV File?

CSV (Comma-Separated Values) is a plain-text file format standardized by RFC 4180 for storing tabular data. Each line represents one row, with values separated by a delimiter — most commonly a comma, though semicolons, tabs, and pipes are also used. Because CSV files contain only raw text with no formatting, formulas, or metadata, they are the universal data-exchange format supported by every major spreadsheet application (Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice), relational database (MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQLite), and cloud platform. CSV is particularly common for data exports from Shopify, WooCommerce, Salesforce, HubSpot, Google Analytics, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and virtually any BI tool or database.

Why Convert CSV to Excel?

CSV is designed for storing and transporting raw data — not for working with it. Excel (XLSX) provides the features professional data work requires: apply bold headers, color-coded rows, and column widths for readability; use VLOOKUP, SUMIF, and pivot tables for in-depth analysis; create bar charts and dashboards directly from your data; filter and sort large datasets with a single click; and organize related tables across multiple worksheets. Most business workflows that begin with a CSV export — sales reports, inventory data, customer lists, financial records — require converting to Excel as the first step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my data safe?+
Yes. Your CSV file is processed entirely in your browser using JavaScript. No data is uploaded to any server. Your file never leaves your device.
What is the maximum file size?+
You can convert CSV files up to 50 MB. A 50 MB CSV typically contains 500,000–1,000,000 rows depending on column count. By comparison, a typical 10,000-row export from Shopify, Salesforce, or a database query is usually under 2 MB.
Does it support different delimiters?+
Yes. The converter auto-detects commas, semicolons, tabs, and pipes. If your CSV uses quoted fields containing the delimiter character — a common pattern in RFC 4180-compliant files — those are parsed correctly as single values.
Can I convert multiple files at once?+
Currently, you can convert one file at a time. Simply click "Convert Another" after downloading to process additional files.
Do I need to install anything?+
No. This tool runs entirely via JavaScript in your browser — nothing to install, no plugins required. Verified working on Chrome 90+, Firefox 88+, Safari 14+, and Edge 90+, including mobile browsers on iOS 14+ and Android 10+.
What Excel format does the converter output?+
The converter outputs XLSX (Office Open XML) — the current standard Excel format. XLSX files open natively in Microsoft Excel 2007 and later, Google Sheets, LibreOffice Calc, and Apple Numbers without any additional conversion step.
How is this different from opening a CSV directly in Excel?+
When you open a CSV file directly in Excel, Excel's import wizard can misformat phone numbers, ZIP codes with leading zeros, long numeric IDs, and date strings depending on your regional settings. Our converter produces a clean XLSX file with correct column structure, avoiding these common import artifacts.
Is UTF-8 and international character encoding supported?+
Yes. The converter fully supports UTF-8 encoding, including accented Latin characters (é, ü, ñ), CJK characters (Chinese, Japanese, Korean), Arabic, Hebrew, Cyrillic script, and emoji.
